Community Based Farmland Protection in Northern Illinois

Project Period:

2002-01-01 - 2005-01-01

Principal Investigator:

Brad Walker and Denny Caneff, AFT Upper Midwest Office and Ann Sorensen, AFT CAE

Description
AFT’s Upper Midwest Field Office and CAE will work with communities in DeKalb, Boone and Kendall counties to form stakeholder planning committees to design and implement community-based farmland protection plans that will achieve verifiable on-the-ground results within the project period. We will use a successful process developed by USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, called Natural Resource Planning, that will empower each community to develop their own plan and implement it.

Outcomes
The desired outcomes of protecting farmland in these counties include: increasing the efficiency of land use in each community; improving the quality of life by providing protected open space; maintaining a viable farming community; and redirecting development to areas less suitable for farming.
